Capturing the Precious Connection: My Approach to Sibling Bond Newborn Photography

jordanalisa photography

Capturing the connection between siblings during a newborn photography session is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. As a dedicated newborn photographer in Minneapolis, I've witnessed how deep and warm these bonds can be, even from the very first moments. Seeing the love and curiosity siblings have for their new family member inspires me. Below is my approach to capturing these heartwarming moments and turning them into lasting memories.

The Importance of Sibling Bonds

Siblings share a special connection that often transcends time. From the moment a new baby arrives, older siblings begin to change and adapt in remarkable ways. For example, in families I’ve worked with, about 60% of older siblings show an immediate sense of responsibility, often wanting to help care for the newborn. During photo sessions, these dynamics create beautiful stories that unfold naturally.

That said, this leaves about 40% of older sibling who are simply overwhelmed and feeling jealous with all of the changes that have happened at home in the past couple of weeks. I have many techniques to safely capture photos of siblings together, even if the older sibling is unsafe with or has no desire to be near the new baby.

Emphasizing the importance of sibling relationships in my photography fosters a more meaningful experience for families. Each gesture—whether it’s a soft kiss on the forehead or an inquisitive touch—holds a story worth sharing. It’s why I focus heavily on these connections during my sessions. If they don't work out, I can fake it REALLY well, so less stress for parents - and again, this is a 100% natural reaction and completely okay. :)

The Art of Posing Siblings

When posing siblings with a newborn, I prioritize natural and relaxed interactions. Overly staged poses can feel stiff and might hinder the genuine connection between siblings. Instead, I encourage moments of interaction.

For instance, I might ask the older sibling to gently place a kiss on the forehead of the newborn or lay down close by, gazing at them with love. This method fosters spontaneous expressions and gestures that truly reflect their bond, leading to stunning images rich in emotion.

Using cozy props, such as soft blankets or cushions, helps older siblings to relax during the session. These elements not only add depth to the images but also create a warm environment that invites tender moments.

Encouraging Natural Interaction

As a newborn photographer in Minnesota, I strive to create an atmosphere where children can express themselves freely. Incorporating play is an effective way to ease nervousness and encourage connection.

I recommend families bring along favorite toys or books. This allows older siblings to share stories or play nearby, creating opportunities for laughter and joy.

I also remind families that it’s completely okay if every shot doesn’t feature perfect smiles. Many times, the genuine moments of exploration and connection capture the real essence of their relationships.

Paying Attention to Details

Along with emotional moments, I also focus on the details that reflect the family dynamic. Individual portraits of older siblings can beautifully complement shared family images. I often ask parents if there are any items with sentimental value to them, perhaps a soft blanket handed down through generations or a cherished toy, and incorporate these into the session.

For example, capturing tiny hands holding onto an older sibling's finger or a special blanket gifted to the newborn highlights the family’s heritage and enhances the story being told through the images.

These small elements can significantly enhance the narrative, adding layers of meaning to the photos.
