Capturing the journey of motherhood is an exciting experience for everyone involved. It's not just about the expecting mother, but also about partners and older siblings who play significant roles in this transformative moment. As a seasoned maternity photographer, I believe involving these family members adds depth and warmth to the photos, transforming them into treasured memories. In this post, I’ll share how I engage families and create joyful moments in our studio maternity sessions.
Setting the Stage for Inclusion
The foundation of a successful maternity photo session starts long before the camera clicks. I prioritize understanding the family dynamics of my clients. Before the session at Jordanalisa Photography, I have discussions to highlight the importance of inclusion. This opens the door for families to share their ideas and preferences, allowing me to tailor the session to fit their unique needs.
One approach I take is sending a pre-session questionnaire to my clients. This document asks detailed questions about their family interests, and any meaningful items they want to incorporate. This preparation helps children feel more at ease and excited about being part of the experience.
The timing of the session plays a critical role, especially when older siblings are involved. I recommend scheduling the shoot during the best part of the child's day, typically in the morning or early afternoon. During these hours, children tend to be more energetic and happy.
I have a large wardrobe for older children that my clients can take advantage of using - even some matching mommy & me sets for girls! Either way, I have a gorgeous formal palette of options to coordinate with whatever pieces in my wardrobe you decide are your style.
Posing should be fun and reflects the family’s natural interactions. Rather than rigid, traditional poses, I guide families to engage in affectionate activities, like holding hands or cuddling around the baby bump.

Incorporating Unique Family Dynamics
Every family has its own story, and understanding these nuances is crucial in creating a personalized experience. If a client has a shy child, I take extra time to build rapport. For example, I might start by engaging them with jokes or showing them my camera. This gentle approach helps them feel comfortable, making it easier for them to express themselves during the shoot.
If partners also wish to contribute, I naturally incorporate their involvement, capturing their unique connection with the expecting mother. It helps in creating images that reflect the love and anticipation present in their journey together.

Cherishing the Experience Together
Incorporating partners and older children into studio maternity photo sessions not only creates beautiful images but also enriches the experience for all. By careful planning and embracing family dynamics, I create snapshots that tell a rich story beyond just a beautiful baby bump.
At Jordanalisa Photography, my commitment is to represent your family authentically, embracing the exciting journey of parenthood. When you leave with stunning photographs, you also take home cherished memories that celebrate your unique family identity.
If you are expecting or considering a maternity session, remember this: Your journey is best captured together. Let’s create beautiful memories that you will treasure for a lifetime!
